A poor boy shouted, “Don’t eat that!” The millionaire wouldn’t have listened if he hadn’t seen it himself…
“I was outside by the window. I stand there sometimes; the waiters bring out leftovers if they’re not too busy. I saw your wife… she took something from her coat pocket, a small capsule. She poured it into the soup while you were looking at your phone, then stirred it with a spoon. It was quick, but I saw it clearly. I know when someone’s doing something they shouldn’t.”
“And you decided to barge in and tell me?”
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
Jake paused for a moment, then looked directly at William.
“Because… I don’t know who you are, but no one deserves to be poisoned. Not even if you’re rich, not even if you’re married to a beautiful woman.”
A guest in the dining room began to clap—awkwardly, but sincerely. Emily, sensing the situation slipping out of her control, sat back down, her lips pressed into a tight line.
“He’s lying. Street kids always lie,” she said.
“Maybe,” William replied. “But maybe he’s the only one here telling the truth.”
Fifteen minutes later, the police arrived, followed by health inspectors. The soup was carefully sealed and sent for expedited testing. The entire scene was captured by the restaurant’s cameras and the phones of onlookers. Emily tried to maintain her composure, but her clenched fists betrayed her tension. One officer began questioning witnesses while another spoke with William, who recounted the situation calmly, requesting that Jake be treated with respect.
Jake sat off to the side, clutching a glass of water. He hadn’t expected to be heard. But now everything felt real.
“We’ll test the soup,” one of the officers said. “But if there’s nothing in it, this could be considered slander. That might mean trouble for the kid.”
William nodded.
“If there’s nothing, I’ll take care of Jake myself. But if he’s right, you need to act.”
An hour later, the preliminary results came back. The soup contained digoxin—a prescription drug that, in high doses, can cause heart failure. The silence that followed was deafening.
The officer turned to Emily.
“Mrs. Thompson, please stand. You’re under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder.”
“This is a mistake! I don’t know how it got there! Someone set me up!” she cried, her voice shaking…
